P5: Recording Radio

                       P5: Recording Radio

We have recorded our DonCast Films radio show and here are a few rushes that we have produced. During our recordng session, we have accumulated some audio we can use in our radio show and also some failed recordings so I will include some of the rushes we have created.

For our advertisement, we decided to advertise Savoy Cinema. We have discussed Savoy in our DonCast Films radio show too. In the first half of our advertisement, you can hear a lot of background noise. Near the end of the recording, you can hear a bash/loud noise in the background while I am talking. I took this audio into Adobe Audition, however I could not remove the loud noise in the background while I was speaking. As a result, I re-recorded the first half of the advert and this is much clearer with a lot less background noise (this is advert 1 re offline).

We recorded a few takes of our DonCast Films jingle. We decided instead of using Jingle2 we prefered Jingle3. I believe Jingle3 sounds clearer so this is what I decided to go with.

We have had to re-record some parts of our audio several times until we were happy with our audio. For example, for our DonCast Films radio show introduction audio we had to record this so many times. Recording 4 is just one of the failed introduction recordings because I got tongue twisted. However, Introduction offline is the file we decided to stick with since we did not mess up while talking.

Another example of messing up our lines is the beginning of the Savoy segment (Savoy Part one Offline). Once again I messed up my lines (Recording 10 audio file), but you can hear the difference between the two audio files.

I have decided to use Adobe Audition to edit my radio show. To create my offline edit, I have imported audio files, arranged them to follow our script and cut them down using the razor tool. An offline edit doesn't require any editing to be done therefore these are just unedited audio files.

This rushes asset log shows how we recorded several versions of a segment. I have explained what the audio is and weather we can use this for our radio show or not. Including our failed audio attemps shows how we persevered and recorded many times. This shows our progression.

                        DonCast Films Breakfast Radio Show

You can hear my edited DonCast Films radio show above. We recorded our radio using a UM-900 Professional USB Condenser microphone. I connected this to my laptop to record our audio. I decided to edit and put my audio together to create our DonCast Films radio show in Adobe Audition.

As you can see above, I have created a multitrack of audio channels. On the first channel there is our DonCast Films radio talkshow recordings. On the second channel I have sound effects for jingles and on the third chennel I have included background music. This helps me differentiate the different audio when editing.

To edit my audio, I used the razor tool to cut out or cut down audio I don't want. For example, the beginning of a clip if it is silent or any filler words such as "like" or "um".  I focused on each audio recording by double clicking in the audio and seeing it in waveform. I then edit my audio using the DeNoise and Parametric Equalizer effects. DeNoise allows me to get rid of the unnecessary background we can hear in the audio. We don't want to keep this, we want the audio to be clear. I can do this by listening to the recording and using the percent slider to remove as much background I need to. This ensured that our voices are clear for our radio show. Sometimes my audio levels were varied, pronunciation of a word might sound boomy when the rest of the sentence doesn't etc. Parametric Equalizer helped me to lower those louder parts of audio and level the audio levels of the recording.

My audio is louder than Ellie's audio, therefore I have changed the audio levels of our talking segments. I did this by using the razor tool to seperate when our individual speech and I used the volume bar (where the pointer is above) to change our individual clips of audio. I increased Ellie's audio more to match mine and I occasionally reduced my audio if it was too loud. Another way I have changed the audio levels is using the track volume tool on the left. You can see I have used this for my music since the volume was too loud for all the music I used. I listened to our radio show using my headphones at 26 volume on my laptop each time to make sure the audio was appropriate.

Because we are producing a commericial radio show, we have included a Savoy advertisement. The idea was to make it sound like the voice you hear around you in the cinemas.First, I used the surround reverb effect. I wanted the audio to sound like it is in a cinema screen room with the speakers on the walls. The closest thing to this is the Theater impulse. I then used the sliders to adjust the effect. The audio then sounded a little echoey like it would in a cinema room when the voice that introduces you to the cinema talks.

I wanted the first half of the advertisement to be in 360 degree sound. I wasn;t sure how to do this at first so I experimented with the settings in Adobe Audition. Eventually, I found the stereo balance tool on the left next to the volume tool. I duplicated the advertisement audio used the razor tool to cut each of my lines apart. I then decided which direction I wanted each audio clip to be heard from. The audio from the top audio channel can be heard from the left while the bottom audio channel can be heard from the right. I used my headphones to make sure the audio was being edited correctly. Some parts of my audio can be heard from both directions. This sounded amazing in my headphones, it is like my voice is bouncing from ear to ear in the right directions. Overall this is my favourite part of our radio show.

Once I finished my radio show, I decided to export this as a WAV file. I did this because WAV files are uncompressed. This makes sure that our DonCast Films radio show is at the highest audio quality attainable. This does however mean that the file size will be larger. Because this would be listened to on the radio, the audio quality must be high as this is what is expected.
